Dear Parents and Guardians,

RE: FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK

Apologies for the delay in this week’s letter but we wanted to finalise some arrangements with KidzCan (see below).

As we approach half term, please note the slight adjustment to our timings for this break from Digi-schooling. Half-term will start after lessons (15h30) on Wednesday 17 February. School will return with the start of lessons (07h30) on Tuesday 23 February.

Introducing our 2021 Head of School – Franchesca Chinhundu

My name is Franchesca Chinhundu and I am in Eland House. I am from Harare and went to Lilfordia School. I joined Peterhouse in D block (Form 1).

I am currently studying English Literature, History and English Language and intend on working in the field of multimedia and journalism practice.

I have been involved in hockey at 2nd team level and athletics and basketball at 1st team level. I was supposed to have gone on a basketball tour in 2020 to South Africa, however the pandemic prevented this from happening. I have also enjoyed being a member of the soccer team.

I serve as a member of the school hospitality club where I have enjoyed being involved in the running of school events. Working as a writer for the school newspaper and now its copy editor has been something I have largely enjoyed.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

RE: FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK

Conversations, and related rumours around a re-opening of schools, abound. Currently we have no indication of when schools will physically re-open. Nevertheless, there are a number of givens from a Peterhouse perspective. Firstly, the national lockdown has been extended beyond 5 February and will now continue for a further ten days to 15 February. Secondly, the school will respect the published term dates and there will be a half term (19 – 22 February). Lastly, we support a quick return to school, appreciating that any return of pupils must be done in a safe and responsible manner. In the interim we will continue teaching using our online platforms. In a note from the Business Director, a boarding credit for the next two weeks has been passed on your school accounts. It should be noted that ZWL statements have had an inflationary adjustment passed on outstanding balances.

Debate Club Oxford Schools 2021 Workshop

On Wednesday the 20th of January the Peterhouse Mixed Junior and Senior Debate Teams participated in an international training workshop which was being run by the Oxford University Debating Union.

The event ran from 8:30pm to 10pm and it featured students from all over the world, with fellow students attending from countries such as Spain all the way to Togo. The experience was tremendously enriching for Peterhouse Debaters as they learned about the advanced rebuttal and argument construction formulas utilised by some of the best international teams in the world.

Peterhouse pupils and staff watched and listened attentively as the Oxford Union Debating Club representatives gave valuable insights into case construction and rebuttal. It was very pleasing to note that our team captains; Shaune Uriri and Mercy Magaya actively participated on this forum by posting responses to questions and by suggesting tactics that may be used in various scenarios. Peterhouse intends to implement these strategies in future matches.

Peterhouse Fitness Goes Digital with SugarWOD

“A product that was designed to do just one thing exceptionally well: give coaches and everyday athletes a memorable workout experience.”

Whilst schools remain closed our sports departments have been actively investigating ways to improve delivery of online fitness sessions to pupils at home – with a view to increase ease of access to workouts, encourage participation and achieve a sense of community, camaraderie and competition even though our pupils are currently isolated from each other.

After researching various existing fitness applications available, we now introduce SugarWOD as the most appropriate, user friendly and relevant app for our needs.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

RE: FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK

Our Digi-school routines appear to have been re-established, and it would seem, for the most part, that they are working well. During the course of last week, debate raged in both local and international media on the merits, or otherwise, of re-opening schools. While there can be little doubt that online teaching plays an important role in ensuring educational continuity, it cannot entirely deliver the kind of curriculum that Peterhouse offers. Nevertheless, it was encouraging to note that set against what is happening in other countries (South Africa, the UK, and Australia) our philosophy behind, and delivery of, online schooling is comparable with independent education in those countries.

Outstanding IGCSE Results for 2020

The IGCSE results have been released and we are delighted with the efforts of the class of 2020. There can be little doubt that the results exceeded expectations, and tribute needs to be paid to both staff and pupils for their perseverance in the face of many challenges. The combination of effective teaching through Digi-school and our ability to get the school open for the bulk of the Michaelmas Term, has been well rewarded.

The overall pass rate at Peterhouse Girls was 91.3% with 66.4% of all papers graded A* to B; this is the sixth year in succession that Peterhouse Girls has achieved a 90%+ pass rate.

Academic colours for the equivalent of 8 A grades, or 8 points, or better, have been awarded to 14 girls - Nicole Allott, Daniella Anderson, Tawananyasha Banda, Ruvimbo Chauruka, Deborah Davy, Kayla Kalweit, Tanatswa Matonda, Nandi Mbele, Joanne Mudzimuirema, Winnet Musikavanhu, Idi Musimwa, Luanna Page, Maida Piccin and Genevieve Shoesmith.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

RE: FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK

Welcome to the start of the 2021 academic year. Obviously we had hoped to be back in the classroom and picking up where we left off last year. The national lockdown, in response to the second wave of Covid, has sadly put paid to our beginning of year plans. While Digi-school is back, we do hope that it will be short-lived and that we will return to school, in a safe and responsible manner, in the not-too-distant future. In terms of the start to the year, I do appreciate there were some gremlins in the Peterhouse Boys network on the first morning of Digi-school; by the time this reaches you these should have been resolved. We are in the process of upgrading the IT infrastructure in the school and this may, from time to time, lead to some teething problems.
