Peterhouse Girls

Sports

Peterhouse Girls has become a force to reckon with as a sporting side in the country. This is attributed to its policies on sport. When girls join the school in D Block (Form 1), sports such as athletics, basketball, hockey, squash, swimming, tennis and volleyball are compulsory. This ensures that all girls are exposed to new sports and their talents are identified and nurtured early.

In the first term, we offer athletics, swimming, tennis, rowing, waterpolo, horse riding and volleyball as main sports. In the second term, basketball and hockey are offered as winter sports while in the third term we have swimming, tennis, rowing, waterpolo, horse riding and volleyball. We have a small group of girls who take golf throughout the year. The Introduction of Archery at Peterhouse since 2014 has produced 8 National Archers in the past 2 years.
Table Tennis and Soccer are played on a more social level, with matches occasionally, while Triathlon and Horse-Riding become more popular each year.

Peterhouse Girls is proud of the selections made each year for National Teams in Athletics, Basketball, Hockey, Rowing, Squash, Triathlon, Archery, Swimming and Tennis. The staff, coaches and girls are committed to sport and continue to excel in all disciplines.

Tours
Peterhouse Girls participates in a number of tours each year especially for hockey, basketball and rowing.

Recent tours have included the St Marys’ Hockey and St Stithians Hockey Festivals in South Africa; basketball festivals and coaching at the University of Pretoria, South Africa; rowers have competed in the South African Junior Rowing Championships and the Junior World Rowing Championships.

Athletics and Cross Country
Athletics training consists of a minimum of three one hour sessions a week which prepares girls for the Inter-House Cross Country Competition; the Invitational Co-ed Cross Country meetings hosted by Watershed College, Arundel and Lomagundi; the Prince Edward Sprints Challenge; the Chisipite Rooney’s’ Invitation Athletics meeting, Arundel Field Events and the Invitation Relays Meeting hosted by Peterhouse Girls. Our school athletes are a dedicated team and strive for excellence at every meeting. We continue to provide a large number of provincial athletes and National Representatives.

Basketball
Basketball is compulsory for D Block (Form 1) pupils as many girls would not have played basketball at junior school. We have three all-weather basketball courts and each session can accommodate over forty girls at training. Matches are usually played in the second term and our U16 and U20 girls take part in the Marondera District trials, the Mashonaland East provincial trials and the National trials where a number of girls are usually selected to represent the Zimbabwe teams for each age group.

Golf
Golf sessions take place at the Marondera Golf Course where the juniors will usually begin with a handicap of 36 and improve to 24. Our First team girls train through the Nick Price Golf Foundation and travel to Harare for professional lessons at Chapman Golf Course. Peterhouse Girls competes in Inter-Schools events as well as tournaments organised by the National Junior Golf Foundation.

Hockey
At Peterhouse Girls we have three separate teams per age group that compete in the three leagues during the winter term – A League, B League and C League.
Our First and A Teams for U14, U15 and U16 age groups are in the top league and compete against their opposing teams from schools such as Chisipite, Arundel, Dominican Convent, Hillcrest, Girls’ College and Dominican Convent and participate in the annual Golden Girls’ Tournament. Our First Team girls are usually given the opportunity to take part in two annual tournaments in South Africa.
Our Second and B Teams compete in the B League as well as the annual Silver Girls’ Tournament and are given the opportunity to participate and compete in coaching clinics in South Africa every three years.
Our Third and C Teams compete in the Third League.
Peterhouse Girls continues to provide players for the Zimbabwe National teams at U14, U16, U18 and U21 level.

Rowing
Rowing is a very exciting and energetic sport and Peterhouse Girls is currently ranked as one of the top rowing clubs in Zimbabwe. Training takes place at Kushinga Dam during the Lent and Michaelmas Terms only. The club is very competitive and attends many regattas where it dominates in nearly all races. The rowers continuously bring home medals and maintain their high standards throughout the season.

Peterhouse Girls rows in single, double and quad races in all categories D to A, and are proud to take a first in almost all of their races. Regattas take place on Sundays against clubs such as Chisipite, Arundel, Hunyani and Girls’ High School and the girls also compete in the annual South African Junior Rowing Championships.

The club is indebted to the overwhelming amount of support by the rowers' parents who are keen to help and be involved.

Squash
Squash is introduced as a new sport in D Block (Form 1) pupils where the girls learn the basics of the game. Talented players are identified and challenge each other to qualify for the school team which trains at Peterhouse Boys.
The girls take part in the Schools’ League against Chisipite, St George's and St John's as well as the local league, MESRA, which involved players from local schools and the Marondera district.
As squash is a minority sport, those who carry on with the sport invariably represent the school, the province and the country at National Level.

Swimming
Swimming is compulsory for D Block (Form Ones) pupils as we feel it is a vital life skill to our pupils.
In the Lent term Peterhouse Girls competes in the Harare League and girls attend three galas as well as the Northern Region Inter-Schools Gala and National Inter-Schools Gala.
In the Michaelmas term, girls attend four galas which involve the Northern Region Schools. Our girls are often chosen to represent Zimbabwe in the Prestige Swimming Tournaments in South Africa.
Professional coaching is given to girls who join the Dorados Swimming Club which competes in the Mashonaland Friday Night Galas in Harare.

Tennis
Peterhouse Girls has eleven all-weather tennis courts and several clay courts. Girls either play in the A league against Chisipite, Convent, Arundel, Gateway, Eaglesvale and Lomagundi or the B league against Watershed, Hillcrest, Chisipite, Arundel, Lomagundi and Convent.
Our girls also compete in the Inter-provincial Championships, the Inter-Schools League and the Melbury Cup knockout tournament.
Our teams continue to go from strength to strength and we provide the majority of Mashonaland East tennis players as well as a high number of National Representatives.

Volleyball
Peterhouse Girls competes with Chisipite, Watershed, Nagle House and the Harare International School at U14, U15, U16, 2nd and 1st Teams level, and competes in the Harare League against Eaglesvale, Gateway, Harare International School and Mufakose at U15, U16 and 1st Team level.
Girls also attend a number of U16 and U20 tournaments throughout the year and host a very popular U20 Invitation Tournament on an annual basis.

Waterpolo
This sport has been recently introduced to Peterhouse Girls and girls play in the Harare Leagues during the Lent Term.
