Infinity Programme

Infinity Programme

“Building character and creating lifelong learners who prepare, care and dare”

Preamble

The Infinity Programme incorporates the following components:
i. Life Skills, Personal and Career Development
ii. Outdoor Education Programme
iii. Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
iv. Leadership Development Programme
v. Tutor Programme

The Infinity Programme is designed to integrate the above mentioned programmes so that all dovetail into an holistic pupil development package that will nurture and support each and every pupil from various developmental angles by a range of competent, motivated and well trained staff during a career at Peterhouse.

Our purpose is to enable pupils to flourish (feel good and do good) and thereby guide them to responsible adulthood where they can fulfil their life’s purpose in accordance with a strong set of values, principles and goals.
Furthermore we aim is to build into the pupils habits of a brave heart and inquiring mind that will never leave them and will equip them for a lifetime of ongoing growth, continuous learning and to live productively and prosperously as gentlemen of substance positively contributing to society (hence Infinity).

It is essential that pupils are given the opportunity to develop The 6 Core Competencies (The 6 Cs) outlined in the Peterhouse Development Plan (Character, Critical thinking, Creativity, Communication, Collaboration and Cross-Cultural skills) also knows as Transferable Skills all of which are essential in the global village and 21st century workplace.
All of these should dovetail with the pupil’s academic development and therefore the Tutor Programme overlaps with the Academic Programme under the Infinity Programme.

1. Life Skills, Personal and Career Development
Every pupil has one lesson per cycle that is dedicated to life skills or personal / career development. Underpinning everything we do in the Life Skills Programme is the Positive Education (Martin Seligman) philosophy.
D to B Block we focus on life skills and personal development per se. From A Block to V Form we partner with Achieve Careers and focus on career development and each pupil is supplied with an Achieve Career Manual that progressively covers the essential career guidance aspects that have to be covered prior to leaving high school. In VI Form the life skill focuses on Career Guidance – specifically university application and aptitude tests.
  
2. Peterhouse Outdoor Education Programme

The Peterhouse Outdoor Education Programme is designed to enable pupils to develop self-awareness, teamwork and leadership and therefore more of their full potential through a series of well-structured wilderness courses and activities.

The programme is supported by, and complements, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, and the Leadership Development Programme: details of which are outlined below.

The Peterhouse Outdoor Education Programme is progressive; it is based extensively in the wilderness and is centred on practical learning experiences.

This programme intrinsically focuses on the 4 R’s. Essential parts of positive education (Martin Seligman) are resourcefulness, resilience, responsibility and relationships. Practical “skills” in these areas are developed in the wilderness when pupils are exposed to experiences that cannot be emulated in any classroom situation.

Every component of the Outdoor Education Programme is compulsory at Peterhouse. Pupils who avoid attendance will still be charged for the programme (unless there are extenuating personal or compassionate reasons).

It consists of:

D Block - Basecamp

The purpose of the D Block Basecamp experience is to give the pupils a fun and challenging experience in the great outdoors. Basecamp will develop self-awareness with a particular focus on social awareness, building new relationships, communication and working in teams.

Basecamp takes place in and around Calderwood Park and lasts for three days with two nights under canvas. Activities include basic canoeing, target shooting, abseiling, basic bush craft, basic First Aid and some initiative tests, including for example, raft building.

Basecamp includes intensive introduction to the necessary bush craft skills for our outdoor programme. Fire making, shelter building, navigation, packing rucksacks, equipment selection and nutrition are all covered in a half day introduction session by professional instructors.

Pupils from PHB and PHG participate in the D Block Basecamp in single sex groups.

Basecamp is run by PH staff assisted by staff from Outward Bound, Zimbabwe (OBZ) and costs in the region of 35USD.

C Block - Outback

The purpose of the C Block Outback is to build on the experiences of the D Block Basecamp, with a strong focus on teamwork, grit and building self-confidence.

Outback is essentially a three day, 45km “journey type” expedition from Gosho Park to Kushinga Pikaleli dam and then on to Zambesi Holidays before returning to Gosho Park. Pupils will spend three nights under canvas. Activities include canoeing, target shooting, water rescue, water related First Aid, abseiling together with several initiative tests. More advanced bush craft skills are developed (fire making, shelter building, navigation, packing rucksacks, equipment selection and nutrition).

Pupils from PHB and PHG participate in the C Block Outback in single sex groups.

Outback is run by PH staff assisted by staff from OBZ and costs in the region of 45USD.

  
B Block – Chimanimani

The purpose of the B Block Chimanimani trip is to build on the experiences of the D Block Basecamp and C Block Outback in the rugged and more physical challenging environment of the Chimanimani Mountains. This location affords each pupil the opportunity to grow as they are physically and mentally tested thereby enhancing the important characteristics of grit, determination and perseverance.

The B Block Chimanimani trip is centred at the OBZ base, not too far from the town of Chimanimani itself. Activities include high cliff abseiling (the Sphinx), high ropes course, bush craft together with some well-structured leadership/initiative tests (Tessa’s Traverse etc.) together with a three day expedition with three nights under canvas which includes summiting Pezza and Quezza (highest peak in Mozambique) mountains and camping at Southern Lakes.

Some PHB pupils may opt for a seven-day expedition in Chimanimani and rather than being based at the OBZ camp they enjoy the challenge of seven days and six nights (under canvas) in one of Zimbabwe’s most remote regions.

Pupils from PHB and PHG participate in the B Block Chimanimani trip in single sex groups.

The B Block Chimanimani trip is run by OBZ staff assisted by staff from Peterhouse.


A Block – Far and Wide (including the Turaco Trail)

The purpose of the A Block trip to Far and Wide is to build on the experiences of the D Block Basecamp, C Block Outback and B Block Chimanimani trips in the rugged and challenging environment of the Eastern Highlands. The trip has a particular emphasis on developing relationships and working with the opposite sex.

The A Block trip to Far and Wide takes place immediately after pupils have completed their IGCSE exams towards the end of the Michaelmas term. Lasting for a week, it is based at the Far and Wide Centre; it is an integrated programme for pupils from both PHB and PHG.

Activities include a confidence/high ropes course, well-structured leadership and initiative tests and discussions, a solo night out and three days (with three nights under canvas) on the Turaco Trail.

Some pupils opt for a six-day expedition on the Turaco Trail rather than being based at the Far and Wide camp; they enjoy the challenge of six nights under canvas on one of Zimbabwe’s most spectacular expedition routes.

The A Block Far and Wide trip is run by Far and Wide staff assisted by staff from PH.

3. Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DOE-IA)
Peterhouse is Zimbabwe’s first and only DOE’s International Award Centre (IAC). The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth development award programme. It involves structured participation in a programme of physical and skill development, service based activity, an adventurous journey and a residential project (Gold Award only) to better equip young people for life.
Over eight million people have participated in the Award in over 140 countries and territories since it was founded by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1956.

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation is a registered UK charity whose mission is to promote the Award, provide young people with the Award programme, and preserve the quality of the Award worldwide. It is world renowned and any DOE award is well recognised on a CV in the global village.
Several Peterhouse staff have been trained to implement the DOE-IA and we made our first Bronze Awards in 2013. By 2015 we had produced our first Gold Award winner.
All C Block pupils have to attempt the DOE-IA. There is a 5USD administration charge and will be additional charges for any Adventurous Journeys (usually about 45USD) or Residential Projects attempted (price based on quotation).
  
4. Peterhouse Leadership Development Programme
“Everyone wins when leaders get better” Bill Hybels.

The Peterhouse Leadership Development Programme is designed to enable pupils to develop an awareness of the importance of leadership and to develop their own leadership style and potential through a series of well-structured courses and activities.

The programme is supported by the Outdoor Education Programme and complements the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, details of which are outlined above.
At the heart of the leadership model at Peterhouse is the ideal of servant leadership i.e. the strongly held belief that leadership is first and foremost about serving the community in which one lives. The servant-leader philosophy contrasts sharply with the concept of positional leadership which puts the leader first; the latter suggests a sense of entitlement associated with rank or seniority whereas the former puts service and others first.
The Peterhouse Leadership Development Programme is progressive and consists of:

Outdoor Education Programme
This makes up the majority of the experiential leadership development. See above.

5th Form – John Maxwell Programme
The purpose of the 5th Form John Maxwell Programme is to encourage pupils, as they approach the top end of the school, to think critically about the concept of leadership prior to taking on formal positions of leadership (House Prefects, School Prefects and Team Leaders etc.) in the final year at school.
All 5th Form pupils are guided through the first four chapters of John Maxwell’s book (there is a 8USD charge for this book), Developing the Leader Within You, in a series of lectures designed to develop leadership knowledge, skills and abilities. Thereafter, pupils decide whether or not they wish to continue with the programme by attending further lectures. It is unlikely that those who opt out of the programme will be considered for leadership positions in the 6th Form.
The programme provides a basic introduction to leadership and leadership theories – specifically:

i. Maxwell’s 5 Levels of Leadership.
ii. John Adair’s 3 Circles of Leadership
iii. Servant Leadership

The concept of Styles of Leadership is discussed and pupils are made aware of what is their preferred style.

Pupil can practice some leadership theory in experiential (outdoor) settings, and so develop some basic leadership skills they can reflect upon. Peterhouse consider it essential that pupils are able to apply the concept of Servant Leadership and offer the opportunity for pupils to participate in supervising younger pupils using this leadership philosophy.
  
Vth and VIth Form – Leadership in Practice
Although pupils do take on positions of leadership at all stages of their career at Peterhouse (e.g. captains of sports’ teams) the Leadership and Personal Development Programme from D Block Basecamp to the Vth Form John Maxwell Programme is designed to ensure that when they reach VIth Form level and take on important school leadership roles they understand the basic concepts of leadership and are prepared to be servant leaders.
In V Form the pupils will be able to put the skills into practice in the House (House training, Monitor of Tinokura evening preps, supervising JDH etc).
Leadership roles at VIth Form level include:

i. School Prefects (including the Head and Deputy Head of School and Heads of Houses)
ii. House Prefects
iii. Captains of Sports and other activities (e.g. President of Toastmasters)

The process for the application, training and appointment for these roles is outlined elsewhere in separate documents.
Irrespective of whether or not an individual pupil takes on a formal leadership role each and every senior pupil should:
i. have a basic understanding of the theories of leadership;
ii. be able to give examples of their own leadership style;
iii. understand their strengths and weaknesses as a leader;
iv. appreciate how emotional and social intelligence are integral to coping in any leadership situation;
v. have developed an understanding of what is a sound and moral character; and
vi. benefit from experiences that develop maturity and personal growth, having participated in the Peterhouse Leadership Development Programme.

5. Tutorial System
Introduction
All full time members of staff (with the exception of the Deputy Head, Director of Studies, and the Chaplain) are required to be an Academic Tutor.

Whilst it is acknowledged that Housemasters/Housemistresses have overall responsibility for the welfare of the pupils in their houses Tutors (both Academic and House Tutors) have a very important part to play in looking after both the academic progress and pastoral welfare of each of their tutees. This implies building up a productive relationship with the pupil concerned together with his family.

The tutorial system

The tutorial system is based upon vertical groups of pupils within individual boarding houses as follows:
i. 6th form tutor groups (5th and 6th form pupils) – groups of 8 (i.e. 4 per year group)
ii. Middle school tutor groups (A, B and C Block pupils) – groups of 9 (i.e. 3 per year group)
iii. Lower school tutor groups (D Block pupils) – groups of 10

Tutorial meetings are held formally on a fortnightly basis; guidance for tutors is provided by the Senior Tutor (Upper School), the Senior Tutor (Middle School) and the Senior Tutor (Lower School), who is the Housemaster of Tinokura. At the top end of the school there will inevitably be a great deal of emphasis on academic performance and university entrance whereas at the bottom end of the school tutorials are more likely to focus on the basic expectations of pupils.

Tutors should also keep in touch with tutees informally and take an overall and active interest in their tutees academic performance, their extra-curricular activities, hobbies and interests, their family background and any disciplinary issues which may occur.
