Peterhouse Girls

Equestrian Centre Update November 2020

The Peterhouse Equestrian Centre (PEC), like most other sectors the world over, was adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As schools were closed, we had no pupils coming down to learn to ride, spend quality time with the horses in the yard or go for rides in Gosho Park and enjoy the wonderful facilities available to them.

Fortunately, for both the horses and the Peterhouse Equestrian Centre, the facilities were available to the Campus children once Horse Riding was announced as a low risk sport. We had a small show (to thank the Campus Families’ for their support), a Pony Camp in Gosho Park and then recently a Pony Trek and sleep over in Calderwood Park.

The PEC livery girls continued to compete from home during the lockdown. They have shown tremendous dedication to both the sport and Peterhouse Girls, we are extremely proud of them! These girls are: Lily Ascott, Taige Mannix, Erin Elliott, Luanna Page, Sienna Page, Katie Loubser; and on the polo field - Emily Wood.

Extensive maintenance work has been carried out at the yard and more Cross Country jumps have been added to our ever expanding Cross Country course; ensuring everything is now in pristine condition ahead of our pupils’ return.

This quiet time has not been without its benefits. It has given the Campus riders an opportunity to gain confidence around the horses and polish up their riding skills, giving them the qualities of real horsemen and women. We have also managed to back two of our young horses, ensuring the horses will be safe and well-mannered around the children. We have just started the process of backing the last young horse, after which all three will rest until the beginning of next year and resume with light work.

Both the staff and horses at the PEC look forward to sharing this unique facility with the pupils of the Peterhouse Group once again. Horse riding teaches children a skill, but also instils in them perseverance, courage, humility, trust and commitment: qualities which they will retain forever.
