From the Rector's Desk - 17th August 2020

Thursday 17 September 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

RE: FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK

The noise of “normality” can once again be heard around the school, and the corridors echo with the sound of banter, good humour, and laughter. Against this backdrop, we recognise that much has changed in the intervening months of “lockdown”. Social distancing, or the constant need to remind the pupils of the need to social distance, is a reality, as is the wearing of facemasks, and regular use of sanitiser in the classroom. In the main, there is a very evident appreciation from pupils and staff that Covid compliance is not a negotiable, and that all of us are required to play a part in order to ensure a safe and healthy environment in the school.

Rifa Conservation Education Camp 2020

Our Learner Guides group went up to Rifa last week and they had a great learning experience – sadly we were missing the Zambian pupils. Bush walks were done in the morning to identify animals, birds, trees, tracks etc. and we covered a variety of different habitats e.g. mopane woodlands, floodplain and riverine vegetation.

Sitting at the mopane pan waterhole doing bird identification we were visited by four elephant bulls, drinking and splashing mud around, magic experience!

Mr de Kock led an excellent detailed dissection of impala – pupils were fully involved learning about the cardio/respiratory system digestion etc. They made biltong, boerewors and a potjie for supper. The remains of the carcass went out for a vulture watch and this also brought in the hyaenas at night.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

RE: FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK

Rumours abound, yet we are no closer to a definitive answer on a date for the re-opening of the school for our examination classes. Nonetheless, we have been in touch with our local Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, and they have provided us with some useful feedback; based on this, we have directed a letter of appeal requesting permission to open the school in preparation for the Cambridge examinations, which start on 1 October.

Friday 21 August 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

RE: FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK

The long fixture free break seems a distant memory and the whole school has quickly returned to the routines of online learning. The feedback from staff is that the classes have restarted with relative ease and there is a good degree of engagement from pupils with lessons. Nevertheless, in a senior tutors meeting this week, there were some robust conversations around ensuring that our online platforms remain meaningful and rigorous.
