World Teachers' Day 2020

The day celebrated to focus on the works of the educators is held by UNESCO in partnership with UNICEF, International Labour Organisation and Education International

The theme for World Teachers’ Day 2020 is “Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future” aims to address the role the teachers have been playing during the COVID-19 pandemic. A UNESCO statement said: “The issue of teacher leadership in relation to crisis responses is not just timely, but critical in terms of the contributions teachers have made to provide remote learning, support vulnerable populations, reopen schools, and ensure that learning gaps have been mitigated. The discussions surrounding WTD [World Teachers’ Day] will also address the role of teachers in building resilience and shaping the future of education and the teaching profession.”

Friday 2 October 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

RE: FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK

The Cambridge examinations started yesterday with both the A Level Divinity and Chemistry Practical examinations. After the trials and tribulations of the last couple of months, and the uncertainty around the re-opening of schools, it was a real sense of relief to see our first candidates enter the examination venues. I must commend all our candidates on their approach to their studies over the last couple of weeks. There appears, in the main, to be a good degree of focus and urgency in their approach to revision. It has been a mangled year and we hope that, with the examination cycle now in full swing, some semblance of normality will start returning to our schools. The Grade 7s returned to Springvale on Monday, and they seemed very excited to be back in the classroom.

World Smile Day 2020

Today is World Smile Day - how are you celebrating?

Did you know that Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet.

As the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DoEIA) at Peterhouse during Covid 2020

Shortly after Covid entered our lives, the DoEIA Head Office in the UK quickly set about spurring us all on to keep engaged with our Awarders and support them working towards their goals. They frequently reached out to us and shared very practical ways in which our participants could continue working on their Awards, in spite of being locked down in their homes.

It was amazing how many of our Peterhouse participants adapted to their new environments and continued working hard each week on their goals. It meant that their violin lesson was not going to take place in the Music Department at school but they had their lesson via Zoom or Google Classroom in their own homes. If it meant that they could not visit the elderly at Borrowdale Trust some participants continued serving the elderly by making biscuits or delicious soups and dropping this off at the closest Old Age Home near their houses.

Sailing Lake Kariba 2020

Duke of Edinburgh's International Award – Qualifying Journey to Lake Kariba – Sailing – September 2020

The term dates were officially reset and we knew that we had one week to get this Qualifying Journey completed before everyone was buttoned down and had to focus entirely on academics.

So, after reams of paperwork and bags of patience, Emmanuel, our driver, managed to get permission from the Ministry and the Police to drive 11 of us to Kariba to complete their Gold Journey at Peterhouse in this new Covid world.

The Leo Club During Lockdown 2020

Our Leo Club have been busy during the Covid19 Lockdown and despite the challenges they have made some good contributions to the local community.

Various members of the club have been teaching farming methods, helping the homeless, donating food, educating less privileged children, spending time with the animals as well as walking dogs at the SPCA, and picking up litter in their areas.
